Goddesses, a Tamil Documentary Film wins at MIFF, 2008
Goddesses – a Tamil documentary has won the golden conch award for the best documentary film at the 10th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF), 2008.
Goddesses was filmed by the Chennai based film maker Leena Manimekalai. Goddesses essays the lives of three ordinary women living extraordinary lives in Tamilnadu. Lakshmi makes a living by singing elegies at funerals. Krishnaveni is a grave digger. Setharaku ventures into sea along with two women co-workers for fishing. The women speak out about their struggle in a all male domain.
This is a first time a Tamil film is adjudged the winner in an international category. The alternative film culture comprising documentary, short and animation films in Tamilnadu is as vibrant as its mainstream cinema.
